Kurt Russell Has Left Django Unchained

The bad news continues!

Shortly after Sacha Baron Cohen announced his departure from the film, reporter Jeff Sneider just tweeted that Kurt Russell has left Django Unchained. According to Sneider, no reason was given nor was a replacement named. Sneider works for Variety, so it’s safe to assume that this isn’t a wild internet rumor.

This news is more troubling than Baron Cohen’s departure, because Kurt Russell’s role, Ace Woody, has much more camera time and action than Baron Cohen’s. It’s also, shall we say, a controversial role that many actors would balk at. With filming more than halfway done, it will be a tough task to find a replacement and get him prepared under such time constraints. I should also note that is another “cursed role.” Kevin Costner originally accepted the role, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Russell was his replacement.

Updates on the situation will be posted once they become available. In the meantime, who do you think should replace Kurt Russell? I’ve seen fans toss Kiefer Sutherland’s name around, but he’s no Kurt Russell.

On a personal note, I’m very disappointed by this news. Kurt Russell really nailed the Stuntman Mike role, and I was eager to see how Tarantino would use him in this film.

I’m not so sure about Sutherland.

The cast issues on this film are a bit sad. Costner and Russell (though not CONSISTENTLY great) seemed to be great choices, and I would have loved to see Michael K Williams as Django.

I thought of a few possibilities of varied ages, based on who I think could display solid badassery.

    Chris Cooper

    Ed Harris

    Mickey Rourke

    Sean Bean

    Nick Nolte (maybe)

Woody Harrelson (Because, you know, like, the first name and shit.)

    Michael Madsen?

    The ghost of Dennis Hopper?

Hell, I’ll say it, Sean Penn.

Several good choices there. Mickey Rourke is a great choice, and I think Woody Harrelson could put in a memorable performance, too. Let’s hope their schedules are open.

I remember reading that it was a scheduling conflict with Kevin Costner’s role of Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan’s Man Of Steel that was the initial reason that Costner had to drop out, even though he was very much looking forward to doing the Tarantino film.
As I understand it, I believe filming on Man Of Steel has completed and is now in post production.
Maybe the role could revert back to Costner, if he’s still free? Would’ve loved to see Russell work with Tarantino again, but I’d still love to see Costner do it too.

Costner could definitely use the comeback that Tarantino movies are infamous for. I hope he gets the role back.

I suppose everyone knows by now, but this part isn’t being recast. The Ace Woody character and plotline will be absorbed by Walter Goggins character.

And also, rumour is that Michael Fassbender will replace Sacha Baron Cohen. Fassbender was in the area prepping a film (either Ridley Scott’s next film The Counselor or the rival slavery film, 12 Years a Slave) and that Tarantino asked him to do it as a favour.

    Big announcement soon i hope.
