Walton Goggins to Replace Kurt Russell in Django Unchained

walton goggins django unchained

After Kurt Russell unexpectedly dropped out of Django Unchained halfway through filming, we wondered how Quentin Tarantino was going to find a replacement on such short notice. According to Ain’t It Cool News, there isn’t going to be a direct replacement. Instead, Tarantino has opted to rewrite the script and remove the Ace Woody character entirely.

So where does Walton Goggins fit into all of this? Goggins already plays a minor role in the film as character Billy Crash. As part of the rewrite, the Ace Woody character will be merged with the Billy Crash character, turning Goggins’ minor role into a major one. The merge makes sense, as both characters are villainous SOBs and there is some overlap between the two.

There is still no word on why Kurt Russell left the film. Ain’t It Cool News claims that while reasons behind his departure are being kept secret, there was no drama behind it and that “Tarantino quickly readjusted.”

Overall, this is satisfying news. Any fan of The Shield and Justified will confirm that Goggins knows how to play sick bastards very, very well. He has no problems playing controversial, racist characters, and will certainly take the Billy Crash character to its fullest potential. His new role is a good fit for him, and hopefully he’ll receive the career boost that he deserves.

Kurt Russell Has Left Django Unchained

The bad news continues!

Shortly after Sacha Baron Cohen announced his departure from the film, reporter Jeff Sneider just tweeted that Kurt Russell has left Django Unchained. According to Sneider, no reason was given nor was a replacement named. Sneider works for Variety, so it’s safe to assume that this isn’t a wild internet rumor.

This news is more troubling than Baron Cohen’s departure, because Kurt Russell’s role, Ace Woody, has much more camera time and action than Baron Cohen’s. It’s also, shall we say, a controversial role that many actors would balk at. With filming more than halfway done, it will be a tough task to find a replacement and get him prepared under such time constraints. I should also note that is another “cursed role.” Kevin Costner originally accepted the role, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Russell was his replacement.

Updates on the situation will be posted once they become available. In the meantime, who do you think should replace Kurt Russell? I’ve seen fans toss Kiefer Sutherland’s name around, but he’s no Kurt Russell.

Massive Django Unchained News Update

Django Unchained

…And we’re back.

Apologies for the delay. Real life matters interrupted regular posting, but we’re back to reporting Django Unchained news again. With production starting this November, the news should be picking up quite a bit.

Rather than writing several single small updates, I’m cramming everything into one giant update. Here’s what has happened since the last post.

Django Unchained Cast Update

Kevin Costner has dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Kurt Russell will be taking over Costner’s Role as Ace Woody.

Don Johnson, Tom Savini, and Gerald McRaney have joined the cast as villanious plantation owners whom, according to Variety, “meet Django and Schultz while in pursuit of a bounty.”

Michael K. Williams claims that Quentin Tarantino has written a supporting role in Django Unchained just for him. He also claims in the same interview that he was at one point considered for the lead role.

Dennis Christopher will play Calvin Candie’s lawyer.

M.C. Gainey, whose biggest role to date has been Mr. Friendly on Lost, has been cast as a rapist (link contains details about the role and possible spoilers).

Laura Cayoutte has signed on to play Calvin Candie’s sister.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks with Quentin Tarantino to join the Django Unchained cast. No word yet on what role he’ll play.
