Kevin Costner Django Unchained

Here’s some Django Unchained news from out of left field: Kevin Costner will be joining the cast as Ace Woody, a sadistic slave trainer who works for Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Deadline, who got this exclusive on this news, describes Costner’s role as follows:

Ace Woody is the one who pits the “mandingo” fighters against one another, and has little qualms about mistreating and even killing the slaves who don’t measure up. The roles that DiCaprio and Costner will play are every bit as sadistic as the one that Waltz played in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds

Kevin Costner’s role and involvement in the film is being compared to the comeback John Travolta made in Pulp Fiction. I personally think it’s a bit premature to making such statements, especially without having actually seen the film, but this is quite an unusual role for Costner, who typically plays “the good guy”.

Kerry Washington Django Unchained

Variety reports that Kerry Washington is meeting with Quentin Tarantino for the lead female role in Django Unchained. She is reportedly “one of a handful of contenders in the mix” (no word on who the other contenders are). If chosen, Kerry would play Django’s wife, Broomhilda, who is bring held captive by a monstrous plantation owner. The Django Unchained script has the character involved in several nude and sexually violent scenes.

Kerry Washington worked with Jamie Foxx in Ray, who was just confirmed for the role of Django.

Confirmed: Jamie Foxx will Play Django in Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx Django Unchained

Variety has confirmed internet rumors that Jamie Foxx has been chosen by Quentin Tarantino to play Django. Jamie Foxx beat out Will Smith, Idris Elba, and Chris Tucker for the part.

Why did Tarantino choose Jamie Foxx? The speculation on the internet is that Will Smith was initially offered the part, but passed on it to protect his clean and family friendly image. The financial backers of the film wanted a big box office name for the part and pushed for Jamie Foxx who has more name recognition domestically and overseas than Elba and Tucker. Tucker hasn’t had a leading role in years, and Elba doesn’t have the right look for the film (the character of Django is supposed to be quite slim). This isn’t to imply that Jamie Foxx won the part strictly for financial reasons. Foxx is a very talented actor as proven by the many awards he won for Ray and Tarantino certainly isn’t the type to settle for the “wrong” actor.

Congratulations Jamie!
